Neighbours call her Violeta and act as though she has been in the neighbourhood all along, and she asks her husband if he would prefer that to be her name. Cristina starts acting strangely, beginning when she is excited to receive a dress that she claims she ordered although her husband finds it unlikely she would have ordered it. It doesn’t take long for the story to shift towards strangeness. He finds a house that has been recently renovated and appears new and lies to Cristina that no one had lived there before since he thinks her superstitions are silly (although he believes in other superstitions), and they move in. The husband, unnamed, narrates that his wife Cristina refused to live in a home that had previously been lived in due to superstitions. The story focuses on a married couple after they’ve bought a new home.
